]]>
Racegoers at Salisbury on Friday 20th August will be treated to an outstanding performance by the leading Madonna tribute, Melissa Totten. Originally from Fairfax, Virginia, Melissa was first approached in Chicago in the late 80’s and asked to do occasional lookalike work, such was her considerable resemblance to the ‘Queen of Pop’. Her story, since those days has been an incredible one, and she has performed all over the world. One Las Vegas columnist commented that: “Melissa’s voice bears a striking resemblance to the original, and perhaps most astonishing is that she looks like Madonna too”.

Melissa herself said of her impending visit to the Wiltshire racecourse: “I have performed in so many different places, from big cities in the States to more rural retreats in Asia. However, I have never performed at a racecourse and I am looking forward to the night. We have a great 90 minute show lined up, complete with a five piece band”.

Melissa recently appeared on the BBC’s The Weakest Link in a lookalikes special, where she finished second.

Jeremy Martin, Clerk of the Course and Executive Director said: “We are very much looking forward to Melissa Totten as Madonna to complement the excellent racing on 20th August”.

A pair of winners for trainer Mick Channon heralded the opening of Salisbury Racecourse\'s 2011 season on what proved a record-breaking afternoon.

The West Ilsley-based trainer had the winner of the second race with 14/1 outsider Chilworth Lad and quickly followed up with Momkinzain in the day\'s penultimate contest.

A crowd of 6,200 adults and approximately 2,000 children were at the Netherhampton venue to see Henry Candy and Dane O\'Neill land the honours in the day\'s curtain-raiser with 11-10 favourite L\'Ami Louis. Named after a rather select restaurant, L\'Ami Louis broke the course record over six furlongs, getting the better of Foxtrot Hotel in an impressive time of 1:11.09 minutes.

Chilworth Lad then had connections celebrating in the day\'s feature race – the Bet On The Guineas At totesport.com Handicap Stakes, which was also shown live on Channel 4 Racing. His time of 1:24.91 minutes was also a course record. The fast times were due to the firm ground and a tail wind. Clerk of the Course, Jeremy Martin added - \'The jockeys all said the ground was quite firm but perfectly safe and with an excellent covering of grass. We have been watering the course in recent days because of the lack of rain\'.

Favourite backers were cheering again when Cathy Gannon delivered Cockney Fire (10/11) in the 5 furlong race for 2 year old fillies.

Boogie Shoes hit the right beat in the fourth race for trainer Roger Varian, and it was then business as usual for Salisbury\'s number one trainer, Richard Hannon, in the fifth contest with the useful-looking Reflect, at 1-3 favourite. Pat Dobbs was aboard the three-year-old, who still holds a Derby entry.

"We\'ll have a sit down and decide what to do next with him," said Hannon, who was denied a double when Patrick Hills and Aurorian were outpaced by Channon\'s Momkinzain in the penultimate contest. Cape Kimberley and Miss CH Jones got the better of George Baker in the finale for lady amateur riders. The next race meeting at Salisbury is on Thursday 12th May.

Salisbury\'s reputation for providing future stars was further enhanced when Carlton House won the big Derby trial at York - the totesport Dante Stakes.

Owned by Her Majesty The Queen, Carlton House is now around 2-1 favourite for the Derby. He made his racecourse debut in a Maiden Stakes at Salisbury when finishing second on a damp day last September. He has won both his races since and gives The Queen perhaps her best ever chance of winning Britain’s greatest Flat race.

At the most recent race meeting at Salisbury on Thursday 12th May, leading Salisbury trainer Richard Hannon was victorious with Airborne Again in the 5 furlong Whitsbury Manor Stud Maiden Stakes, ridden by Richard Hughes

The first race of the day was live on Channel 4 Racing and provided Sussex trainer John Dunlop with a winner when Miss Topsy Turvy and jockey Chris Catlin saw off 11/8 favourite Sacred Shield.

Trainer Henry Candy and jockey Dane O\'Neill enjoyed their second Salisbury success of the summer when 3/1 favourite Sluggsy Morant won the St John Ambulance Charity Raceday Handicap Stakes over 6 furlongs. Favourite backers were celebrating again when the Hamdam Al Maktoum owned Tasheyaat came home a narrow first in the Bridgend Hotel Islay Maiden Fillies\' Stakes.

Local trainer George Baker enjoyed his first Salisbury success since moving to Fordingbridge\'s Whitsbury yard when his namesake won the finale for Apprentice riders.

Jeremy Martin, Clerk of the Course said \'It was a good day with some exciting finishes. We were pleased to see Carlton House win at York and we will be hoping he wins the Derby at Epsom\'.
