Salisbury's reputation for providing future stars was further enhanced when Carlton House won the big Derby trial at York - the totesport Dante Stakes.
Owned by Her Majesty The Queen, Carlton House is now around 2-1 favourite for the Derby. He made his racecourse debut in a Maiden Stakes at Salisbury when finishing second on a damp day last September. He has won both his races since and gives The Queen perhaps her best ever chance of winning Britain’s greatest Flat race.
At the most recent race meeting at Salisbury on Thursday 12th May, leading Salisbury trainer Richard Hannon was victorious with Airborne Again in the 5 furlong Whitsbury Manor Stud Maiden Stakes, ridden by Richard Hughes
The first race of the day was live on Channel 4 Racing and provided Sussex trainer John Dunlop with a winner when Miss Topsy Turvy and jockey Chris Catlin saw off 11/8 favourite Sacred Shield.
Trainer Henry Candy and jockey Dane O'Neill enjoyed their second Salisbury success of the summer when 3/1 favourite Sluggsy Morant won the St John Ambulance Charity Raceday Handicap Stakes over 6 furlongs. Favourite backers were celebrating again when the Hamdam Al Maktoum owned Tasheyaat came home a narrow first in the Bridgend Hotel Islay Maiden Fillies' Stakes.
Local trainer George Baker enjoyed his first Salisbury success since moving to Fordingbridge's Whitsbury yard when his namesake won the finale for Apprentice riders.
Jeremy Martin, Clerk of the Course said 'It was a good day with some exciting finishes. We were pleased to see Carlton House win at York and we will be hoping he wins the Derby at Epsom'.
