SUCCESSFUL
SEASON ENDS
Posted
October 6th, 2003
Salisbury
Racecourse's 2003 season ended on Wednesday 1st October with
champion jockey Kieren Fallon winning the last race aboard
champion trainer, Sir Michael Stoute's 'Kingsword'. The horse
is a progressive two year old and is entered in big races
at Doncaster and Newmarket.
Jeremy
Martin: 'This is typical of the kind of horse we get at
Salisbury every season - youngsters with futures - and this
year has been no exception'.
Other
winners during the day included 'Alshawameq' in the Heritage
Audi Maiden providing Hamdan Al Maktoum with his sixth Salisbury
winner of the season. Sheikh Mohammed's brother was numerically
the leading owner at Salisbury. 'Taranaki' at 20-1 won the
6 furlong Weatherbys Bank Handicap, and the Mick Channon trained
'Millbag' had the best turn of foot to win the Averti Conditions
Stakes. Channon trained 7 winners at Salisbury during the
season, two behind Richard Hannon. Other successful trainers
were David Elsworth, John Gosden and John Dunlop each with
five.
Leading
jockeys were Richard Hughes and Steve Drowne with 7 winners
apiece, closely followed by Dane O'Neill and Kieren Fallon
with 6. Richard Hills came next with 5. Racings most famous
jockey, Frankie Dettori, rode 3 winners.
Jeremy
Martin: 'Richard Hughes has been leading jockey in recent
seasons and who can forget his four winners at our first Sunday
meeting in May? That day we had six out of seven winning favourites
which kept the Bank Holiday weekend crowd happy!'
During
the season there were 95 races at the 15 meetings, 33 of which
were won by the favourite (34.7%).
The remarkably
good weather at nearly all the meetings helped attendances
increase. 58,374 people went racing at Salisbury during 2003
compared to 53,893 last year - an increase of 8.3%. The Tote
took over £1 million at the course for the first time.
Martin
concluded: 'It has been a good year for us - the staff
can be pleased with what they have achieved. Our big £50,000
race, the Sovereign Stakes was a real highlight with Passing
Glance beating Priors Lodge by a short head'. Both horses
have each won a Group 2 race since. 'We will be looking out
for Salisbury winners like 'Gracefully', 'Silk Fan' and 'Iqte
Saab' next year and we are still very optimistic that the
Sovereign Stakes will be upgraded to a Group 3 race'.
The new
season starts on Thursday (evening) 22nd April.
