SALISBURY
RACES TO BE COVERED BY BBC THIS OCTOBER
Posted
February 11th, 2004
Salisbury
is to stage an extra two day’s racing this year, on Friday
8th and Saturday 9th October.
The two
days which are normally Ascot fixtures are being transferred
to Salisbury, as a result of Ascot’s extensive redevelopment
programme which starts in October.
The BBC
will cover 4 races on both days.
“We
are delighted to be able to stage this televised two day fixture,”
said Jeremy Martin, Racecourse Manager and Clerk of the Course
at Salisbury.
“It
is good news for the course. I am told that Salisbury last
had terrestrial TV coverage 25 years ago in April 1979, when
American jockey Steve Cauthen, made his UK debut.
"With
two Group 3 contests (Cornwallis Stakes and Autumn Stakes)
over the two day meeting, it means that Salisbury will have
three Group races in 2004, as our own Sovereign Stakes was
recently upgraded.”
Other
facts:
- It
now means Salisbury has 17 days racing in 2004,
- Friday
8th October features the £40,000 ‘Autumn Stakes’ for 2 year
olds over 1 mile,
- Saturday
9th October features the £40,000 Group 3 ‘Cornwallis Stakes’
for 2 year olds over 5 furlongs and the £32,000 Listed ‘EBF
Harvest Stakes’ for older horses over 1 mile and 4 furlongs,
- It
now means Salisbury has three Group races and five Listed
races in 2004,
- Prize
money over the two days is expected to be £250,000 and for
the whole season to exceed £1.1 million.
