EXCITING
ACTION AT SALISBURY ON TUESDAY AND SUNDAY
Posted
June 6th, 2004
Second
& final Sunday fixture of 2004 sure to be popular.
There
are two exciting fixtures coming up at Salisbury racecourse
within the next week, with racing taking place on Tuesday,
June 8, and on Sunday, June 13.
June 13
presents racegoers with the second and final opportunity of
2004 to attend one of the hugely popular Sundays at Salisbury.
In addition
to quality racing, there will be plenty to keep every member
of the family amused, with lots of children's entertainments
including clowns, a bouncy castle and gladiator jousting.
Quite appropriately with the Euro 2004 soccer championships
about to enter full swing, there will be a penalty shoot-out
competition for racegoers to show off their soccer skills.
A full creche will also be in operation.
On the
racing side, the Sunday regularly attracts the top jockeys,
with Frankie Dettori riding a double on the card last year.
The highlight of the day is Salisbury's first Listed race
of the season, the £35,000 AXMINSTER CARPETS CATHEDRAL STAKES
(3.35pm) over six furlongs. Now in its third year, this exciting
contest is open to three year olds and upwards. The Roger
Charlton-trained Avonbridge was triumphant in 2003 and went
on to run some very good races in defeat later in the season,
most notably when third in the Group One Prix Maurice de Gheest
at Deauvlle in France.
Action
gets under way on June 13 with the CHAS H BAKER MAIDEN FILLIES'
STAKES (2.00pm) and the six-race programme concludes with
the AXMINSTER CARPETS APPRENTICE HANDICAP STAKES (4.40pm).
The second most valuable race is the AUTECNIQUE ALFA ROMEO
RATED STAKES (2.30pm) over 14 furlongs while two other supporting
races are both backed by totesport - the £10,000 toteplacepot
HANDICAP (3.05pm) over five furlongs and the totesport.com
"CITY BOWL" FILLIES' HANDICAP (4.10pm) over a mile and a half.
Milton Bradley, so renowned for his handling of sprinters,
recorded a 1-2 in the toteplacepot Handicap in 2003, courtesy
of Currency and Corridor Creeper.
Tuesday,
June 8, has a seven-race programme with the feature of the
day being the EBF MARGADALE CLASSIFIED STAKES (3.45pm) over
a mile and a quarter. Last year this contest fell to the Geoff
Wragg-trained Quiet Storm who returned to Salisbury and was
second in the Listed EBF Upavon Fillies' Stakes in August.
It has attracted strong entry of 17 including Motive, trained
by Sir Michael Stoute and the probable mount of Kieren Fallon,
the combination successful in the Derby on Saturday, June
5.
Racing
begins on June 8 with the EDDIE REAVEY MAIDEN AUCTION STAKES
(2.15pm) over six furlongs, which remembers the late trainer
who was based at East Hendred, and concludes with the ALAN
BLENCOWE MOTOR RACING HANDICAP (5.15pm). The main supporting
race is the SOUTH WEST RACING EXPERIENCE HANDICAP (3.15pm),
a six-furlong event for three year olds and upwards. Wantage-based
Henry Candy took this contest in 2003 with Nivernais.
A big
screen will be in operation at both fixtures to ensure that
racegoers miss none of the action and full-colour racecards
will also be available.
Jeremy
Martin, Clerk of the Course and General Manager at Salisbury,
commented: "Salisbury offers exciting racing in lovely
surroundings and racegoers will be able to see some of the
best jockeys in action.
"Our
Sunday fixtures are always popular and we have a good range
of entertainments for all racegoers on June 13."
The gates
open at 12 noon on June 8 and at 11.00am on June 13. Admission
prices are Members £16, Tattersalls £10 and Course £5 and,
as at all Salisbury's meetings, accompanied children under
16 are admitted FREE.
Salisbury
also races later in the month, with the historic Bibury Meeting
taking place on Wednesday and Thursday, June 23 and 24.
