2005 SEASON ENDS ON A HIGH

Posted October 10th 2005

The first three races of the day on Saturday 8th October were screened live on BBC 1. Two of the races were high class Group 3 events for 2 year olds, sponsored by Sky Bet, and both races proved to be thrilling contests with photo finishes required each time. The winner of the 1 mile Group 3 skybet.com Autumn Stakes was won by an outsider, the 20-1 chance, Blitzkreig, who just held off the challenges of Dylan Thomas and Arabian Prince, trained by Irish Champion trainer, Aidan O’Brien, having his first ever runners at Salisbury. The following race, the Group 3 skybet.com Cornwallis Stakes over 5 furlongs, also for 2 year olds, was another cracking finish with the Peter Chapple-Hyam trained Hunter Street (4-1) pouncing late to deny Ajigolo (25-1).

The fixture, attended by 4,300 racegoers, had been transferred from Ascot because of their redevelopment, and ended with local trainer David Elsworth winning his ninth race at Salisbury of the year, with 7-2 favourite High Bray ridden by Richard Quinn.

Jeremy Martin, Clerk of the Course, said: “It was a great end to the season and we were delighted that our three BBC races in particular went well. A winning favourite in the last was also a popular way to round things off. The racing ground was reported as being very good, which was important to us for such a big meeting. The atmosphere was excellent and a few hundred people stayed on at the end to watch the football, which we showed in the bars".
