2006 OPENS WITH NEW COURSE RECORD

Posted May 10th 2006

The 6 furlong course record was broken on Sunday 7th May in the opening race of what is expected to be another good season at Salisbury. Bentong (5-2 fav), a 3 year old colt, trained by Paul Cole, took 1 min 11.3 seconds to cover the 6 furlongs (three quarters of a mile) knocking 0.2 seconds off the record which had stood for 20 years since June 1986. The race was screened live on Channel 4 Racing.

Former local trainer, David Elsworth, who has moved to Newmarket, carried on his excellent strike rate at Salisbury and trained three of the six winners during the afternoon. First came Loyal Royal (3-1) in the 6 furlong Maiden, followed by Snoqualmie Boy (2-1) in the 1 mile & 2 furlong handicap, and finally Degas Art (2-5 fav) in the 1mile & 4 furlong Maiden. Snoqualmie Boy is entered in the Derby and is very highly regarded by connections. All three Elsworth winners were ridden by jockey John Egan. Richard Hannon, another trainer who does very well at Salisbury won the 5 furlong Conditions race for 2 year old fillies with Gilded (4-7 fav) under Dane O'Neill, and the Hamdan Al Maktoum owned colt Ebtikaar won the concluding 1 mile & 6 furlong handicap for trainer John Dunlop and jockey Martin Dwyer.
