SALISBURY WINNER WINS THE DERBY

Posted June 5th 2006

Sir Percy has won the 2006 Vodafone Derby at Epsom Downs. Salisbury Clerk of the Course, Jeremy Martin said: "I am delighted that Sir Percy won the Derby. Sir Percy was a Salisbury winner in late June last year, and is the first Salisbury winner to go on to win a 'Classic' since Islands Sands won the 2,000 Guineas in the year 2000. We always get very nice young horses at Salisbury and each year we get at least one horse that seems to go onto Group 1 race success. A victory in one of the five famous Classics is even better and proves that we can attract the very best! It was also good to see Dylan Thomas, who was a very close second here in a Group 3 race last October, finish third in the great race.

"I know that the great Mill Reef won at Salisbury before his Derby success in 1971, but I don’t think we have seen a future Derby winner here since".

It was immediately after his Salisbury win that Sir Percy’s trainer, Marcus Tregoning, confidently said his horse would win at Glorious Goodwood and then win the ‘Dewhurst Stakes’ at Newmarket in October – flat racing’s leading 2 year old race. Sir Percy did duly oblige on both occasions, but 12 months ago on a beautifully warm and sunny day at Salisbury, when the course also welcomed back Lester Piggott to open the new Wiltshire Stand; could Marcus Tregoning and his team ever have believed that they had a future Derby winner? Well done to them all.
