Valuable 2008 Races

We all enjoy seeing good horses at Salisbury. The racecourse now stages a valuable and established Group 3 race in mid-August, as the annual highlight event, as well as four high class Listed races. Salisbury continues to see top quality horses every year.

  The totesport.com Sovereign Stakes - Thurs 14th August -
Value £55,000

This valuable Group 3 race, over 1 mile, is for colts and geldings aged 3 years and upwards. In 2004, it was the highest rated Group 3 race in the whole country, out of 65 equivalent races, and remains the highest rated Group 3 race since. The popular Norse Dancer won it that year beating top class Lucky Story. The last three winners have been Layman (2005), Belenus (2006) and Pride of Nation (2007). This race has quickly become established and the top trainers always support it where possible.

The EBF Upavon Fillies Stakes - Wed 13th August -
Value £36,000

This is a Listed Race over 1 mile and 2 furlongs for fillies and mares aged 3 years and upwards.

Some very nice fillies have taken part in this race over the years and winners include top class performers such as Chorist, New Morning, La Persiana and Pictavia. The 2007 race was as strong as ever with the winner, Promising Lead, going to be a very close second in a Group 1 race in Paris.

The Axminster Carpets Cathedral Stakes - Sun 15th June -
Value £30,000

A Listed race over 6 furlongs for 3 year olds and upwards, which usually attracts a field of 7 or 8 runners. Former winners of this race include decent sprinters such as Avonbridge, Moss Vale, Leitrim House, Palace Affair and Etlaala. The 2007 race saw a scintillating victory for the outstanding Sakhee's Secret who went to win the Group 1 July Cup a few weeks later.

The EBF Dick Poole Fillies Stakes - Thurs 4th September -
Value £27,500

A Listed status for 2 year old fillies over 6 furlongs. The best filly to win in recent years was the Clive Brittain trained Crimplene in 1999 who went on to win three Group 1 races, including the Irish 1,000 Guineas. Talented and very well bred fillies such as Nidhaal, Suez and Nyramba have all taken this race. Fashion Rocks won the race in 2007.

The EBF Lochsong Fillies Handicap - Thurs 4th September -
Value £25,000

Named after the Champion sprinter Lochsong, who made her debut here, this fillies handicap over 7 furlongs is always well supported.

The Weatherbys Stonehenge Stakes - Fri 29th August -
Value £21,500

Our youngest Listed race established in 2002. It is for 2 year olds over 1 mile. Winners include Godolphin's Perfectperformance and in 2006, the Andrew Balding trained Streets Ahead who was sold to race in the USA shortly afterwards. The 2007 race turned out to be a race of outstanding quality with top prospects McCartney and Scintillo filling the first two places.
